Who we are

Abiero Girls’ Empowerment (AGE) is a community-based organisation (CBO), founded by Elizabeth Abiero in June 2023, after she visited Wasamo girl’s school in Mfangano Island, Homabay County, where she discovered the level of poverty and inequalities that exist in the rural setup, especially with regard to access to basic education, healthcare and hygiene facilities for adolescent girls.

AGE is focused on further understanding the problems that adolescent girls and young women encounter through programs, initiatives and activities, designed to improve their education, physical and mental health for prosperity and better life in future. Our organisation (AGE) and its team are committed to providing the girls in Wasamo girl’s school and all girls in Mfangano Island an opportunity to quality school education with nutrition-rich food, physical, reproductive and mental health education through programs and services such as counselling and mentorship. We would further like to empower girls in Wasamo girl’s school and Mfangano Island with life-long skills and knowledge for self-independence and brighter future

WHAT WE DO

Education for All:

  • Access to Quality Education for Girls of All Ages: This involves ensuring that girls have equal access to educational opportunities as boys. This might include building schools in areas where they are lacking, providing transportation for girls to attend schools, and ensuring that schools have adequate resources and trained teachers.
  • Scholarships and Tuition Support: Providing financial assistance to girls who may not be able to afford the cost of education on their own. Scholarships can cover tuition fees, books, uniforms, and other school-related expenses.
  • Educational Workshops and Resources: Organizing workshops and providing resources that enhance girls’ learning experiences. These could include access to libraries, computer labs, science equipment, and extracurricular activities that promote academic and personal growth.

Mentorship and Guidance:

  • Experienced Mentors and Role Models: Pairing girls with mentors who can provide guidance, support, and encouragement. These mentors can be professionals, community leaders, or older students who serve as positive role models.
  • Personal and Academic Guidance: Offering individualized support to help girls navigate academic challenges, set goals, and make informed decisions about their education and future careers.
  • Leadership Development: Providing opportunities for girls to develop leadership skills through workshops, training programs, and hands-on experiences that empower them to become agents of change in their communities.

Life Skills Training:

  • Building Confidence and Self-Esteem: Offering workshops and activities designed to boost girls’ self-confidence, develop a positive self-image, and cultivate resilience in the face of challenges.
  • Health and Hygiene Education: Teaching girls about personal hygiene, reproductive health, nutrition, and other essential aspects of physical and mental well-being.

Financial Literacy and Entrepreneurship:

  • Financial Literacy: Educating girls about basic financial concepts such as budgeting, saving, investing, and help them make sound financial decisions throughout their lives.
  • Entrepreneurship: Providing training and support for girls interested in starting their own businesses or pursuing entrepreneurial ventures. This can include mentorship, access to resources, and networking opportunities.

Community Engagement:

  • Involving Parents and Guardians: Engaging parents and guardians in their daughters’ education and development by providing them with information, resources, and opportunities to actively participate in school activities and decision-making processes.
  • Raising Awareness About Gender Equality: Promoting awareness and understanding of gender equality issues within the community through educational campaigns, workshops, and discussions.
  • Advocating for Girls’ Rights: Empowering girls to advocate for their own rights and mobilising community members to support policies and initiatives that promote gender equality and protect girls from discrimination and violence.
